DO I NEED A COMPUTER?
Yes, if you want the convenience of  being able to request and receive the information that is on this media.

DO I NEED A COMPUTER TO HAVE A WEB SITE?
No, The files can be stored on another machine that's attached to the World Wide Web (a server). You will need a person to construct and manage your files (A web master)  

WHAT IS AN ISP?
ISP stands for Internet Service Provider, it is a company in the business of providing you with access to the world wide web. This is done through methods involving simple telephone lines, direct connection, broadcast, or satellite. They also provide the customer with technical support, similar to the phone company. Without an ISP of some type you would have no internet access.

WHAT IS A DIAL UP ACCOUNT
Its a service that lets you connect you computer to the internet through your telephone line. This Is one of the most common services provided by an ISP.

WHAT IS A "BROWSER"
It is a computer program that runs on your local computer, that allows you to request and receive  files from the internet through a Dial Up Account or direct network connection. It then  reconstructs the file  for display on your computer screen. 

WHAT IS A WEB PAGE?
A Web Page is a data file that is stored on a computer attached to the World Wide Web. It is displayed by the Browser program on your local computer after it is obtained through your internet connection.

WHAT IS A WEB SITE?
A Web Site is a collection of web pages that are stored on a computer attached to the World Wide Web. They are displayed by the Browser program on your local computer after they are obtained through your internet connection.

WHAT IS A MODEM?
A modem is a device used to modulate and demodulate (encode and decode) computer information as it is sent to and received from the telephone line.

WHAT IS HTML?
Hypertext Markup Language is the internationally accepted code that a web page must be written in for to to be decoded by a Browser program..

WHAT IS A VIRTUAL HOST?
A service provided by an ISP that holds your files in such a manner that a visitor can't tell that you don't own the machine that the files are on.

WHAT IS A CLIENT
In the computer world it is the program or machine at the end of the receiving chain. The Email program on you machine is a client program to the ISP Post Office.  

WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME?
A domain name is a group of letters, numbers, and hyphens in the form 'yourownname.com' or 'yourownname.net' where 'yourownname' can be almost anything. The domain name represents the address to the files that you are requesting. A domain name, should be relatively easy to remember.

WHY DO YOU NEED A DOMAIN NAME?
A domain name is your unique identity on the World Wide Web. Your domain name can be used for your Web site address, as well as the host of your email address. For businesses and organizations, a domain name can help brand your products and services. For individuals and clubs, a domain name can identify your affiliations, relationships, or just be your online version of a customized license plate. 

WHAT CHARACTERS CAN YOU USE IN A DOMAIN NAME?
The valid characters for domain names are the alphabet, numbers, and hyphens. Domain names are not case sensitive, therefore YourDomainName.com and yourdomainname.com are NOT different. A domain name cannot start or end with a hyphen. . There can be NO SPACES in a domain name. Special characters such as exclamation marks (!), question marks (?), and underscores (_) are NOT allowed

HOW LONG CAN A DOMAIN NAME BE?
A domain name can only be 26 characters long, which includes the extension. Therefore, if you are using the .com/.net/.org extensions, your desired name can be 22 characters long.

WHAT IS A SERVER?
A server is a computer attached to a network with the primary job of holding and distributing data. It also processes applications and handles security that are part of the computer network system. 

WHAT IS A DNS AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
DNS stands for Domain Name System and it is the system that the Internet uses to find the information that you want. Domain names are registered with a central organization in each country.. In the United States the registry is called InterNIC. When someone enters a Domain Name into a Web browser, their Internet Service Provider's DNS computer looks up the IP address associated with that domain name.  Once the ISP's computer finds the IP number it can access the web page..

WHAT IS  InterNIC and what is NETWORK SOLUTIONS INC.?
InterNIC stands for Internet Network Information Center and is the organization that keeps track of Internet domain names and the DNS. Network Solutions Inc. is the company that has been contracted by the U.S. Government to control InterNIC.

WHAT IS AN IP ADDRESS?
The Internet Protocol address or IP Address is a numerical identifier for a computer (server) attached to the internet. An IP Address is series of  four numbers (a maximum of 3 in each group) separated with periods example (209.192.189.124).   IP addresses are like street addresses - they refer to specific servers and their physical location on the network. Domain names are like the names on the mailboxes, they are associated with people and with content.

DO I NEED TO HAVE A SERVER TO REGISTER A DOMAIN NAME?
NO, There are services that will "Park" your domain name at their server for free. This attracts client and advertisers to their web site.

WHY DOES THE InterNIC CHARGE FOR DOMAIN REGISTRATION?
Network Solutions requires a  $70 setup fee to keep track of your domain name and associated information. The InterNIC will send you a bill (both email and snailmail) directly for the domain name. Usually you can expect that bill within 2-4 weeks and you will have about a month to pay  it. The easiest way, however, to pay for your domain name is to visit their Web site at http://payments.internic.net/ and pay using their online forms. If you don't pay your InterNIC fees you will lose ownership of your domain name. InterNIC will provide you with information on how to pay them. after the first year they charge you $35.00 per year for registration fees.
